ChatGPT’s voice mode just got a new model. On October 15, 2026, OpenAI announced GPT-Live-1.1 for ChatGPT, Codex and dots, “rolling out today to all users”.
What’s new
- 13 new voices
- “Considerably better” performance in French, German, Hindi, Mexican Spanish, Korean, Japanese and other languages, with fewer accents bleeding into each other
- More natural delegation and better steerability, and less “checking…” while it works
- Language-specific voices, such as Aube and Rivage in French, Sonna and Miko in German, and Tinta and Arrullo in Mexican Spanish
Who gets what
According to OpenAI’s Help Center, Live runs on GPT-Live-1.1 or the lighter GPT-Live-1.1 Quip depending on your plan:
- Free: limited access to Quip
- Go: 3 hours of Quip per rolling 24 hours
- Plus: 3 hours of GPT-Live-1.1
- Pro ($200/month): unlimited
Live can use web search, memory and connected apps, but not video or screen sharing. For that, you still need the older Advanced mode. Audio clips are kept for 30 days with the chat. The model is “coming soon” to the API.
Rocks take
Better French is good news for our readers. ChatGPT’s voice often sounded like an American speaking French. Not everyone is happy, though: on OpenAI’s forum, some users say familiar voices like Sol changed after the update. If you rely on voice mode daily, test it before you judge.
