Scam texts and fake bank calls are now a daily nuisance, and Google is answering with a new layer of defences. In an October 14, 2026 post on its Keyword blog, the Android and Google Messages teams announced a package of anti-scam features — some for Pixel and Galaxy flagships, others coming to hundreds of millions of phones from other brands. Google says its AI Scam Detection already flags more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts every month.

Enhanced protection mode in Google Messages

The biggest addition is an opt-in Enhanced protection mode in Google Messages, rolling out “in the coming weeks.” It unlocks three things:

  • Cloud Gemini scam analysis: for conversations with unknown senders, Messages can use Google’s most capable cloud Gemini models to spot slow-burn scams. Google says this runs inside Private AI Compute, an encrypted space it says even Google can’t access.
  • Smarter link checks with Gemini Nano: on-device Gemini Nano uses real-time web signals to judge brand-new links before you tap. This needs a Pixel 10 or newer, a Galaxy S26, Galaxy Z Flip 8 or Z Fold 8, or other select devices.
  • Link checkpoints: redesigned warnings before you open links from numbers that aren’t in your contacts, previously limited to some countries or to Android Advanced Protection.

Chat scam alerts beyond Pixel

Pixel phones already warn about suspicious messages from popular chat apps right in the notification shade. Google says it is working with HONOR, Infinix, iQOO, itel, JOVI, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, TECNO, vivo and Xiaomi to bring this on-device protection to “hundreds of millions” more users later this year, as 9to5Google also notes. Exact models depend on each manufacturer.

Screen sharing and call forwarding

  • Automatic screen-share privacy now extends to Chrome and Android WebView, blanking login fields and payment screens while you share your screen. It rolls out this month on Android 15 and later.
  • Call-forwarding protection stops apps from silently redirecting your calls (a classic way to steal one-time codes) and warns you if you’re tricked into dialling a forwarding MMI code. It arrives in early December on Pixel and select devices.

Verified bank calls

Google also highlights verified financial calls, built with Banco do Brasil, Itaú Unibanco and other banks: Android checks with the bank’s app whether the bank really placed the call and hangs up on spoofed ones. Google says more than 3 million spoofed calls have been blocked since June for those two banks alone; Revolut also uses the system.

Rocks take

Note that the Android-versus-iPhone comparisons in the post come from a Google-commissioned report and a Google/YouGov survey. The useful part is practical: if you have a recent Galaxy or Pixel, turn on Enhanced protection when it appears; if you use a Xiaomi, OnePlus or Motorola, watch for the chat-alert update later this year. And set it up on your parents’ phones first — they are the ones scammers call.
