Nintendo made the Zelda Switch 2 special edition official. Polygon reported on September 8, 2026 that a black, gold, and green hardware set tied to Zelda’s 40th anniversary and the Ocarina of Time remake will hit on October 29—just as the standard Switch 2 climbs to $499.99.

What’s in the themed hardware

The console and controllers lean on Link’s Triforce of Courage palette, with triangle decals, Triforce marks, and the Hylian Crest. Buying the console includes themed Joy-Con 2 controllers. Nintendo is also selling a matching carrying case and screen protector. A special Pro Controller ships with a Hyrule Castle display stand and, per Polygon, will be exclusive to the Nintendo Store plus the New York and San Francisco retail shops.

Release timing is deliberate: the hardware lands one week before the Ocarina of Time remake’s November 5 Switch 2 launch. Polygon notes Nintendo still has not published a pre-order link or start date—so treat October 29 as the ship target, not a guarantee you can reserve tonight.

The $499.99 context

The reveal coincides with Nintendo raising the Switch 2’s price to $499.99, a move Polygon links to an AI-driven component shortage squeezing gaming hardware industry-wide. Special editions will not erase that math, but they do give collectors a reason to swallow the hike. Retail staff have already been warning shoppers about the impending increase, according to the same report.

Should Rocks readers care?

If you were already planning a Switch 2 for the Ocarina remake, the Zelda skin is the cosmetic tax you either want or skip. If you are price-sensitive, the bigger story is the $499.99 baseline—not the crest on the kickstand. Watch for the missing pre-order window; themed Nintendo hardware tends to sell out before casual browsers notice.

Remake timing and the wider Zelda year

Polygon’s report ties the hardware drop to more than cosmetics. Nintendo showed first remake details and about 15 minutes of gameplay for the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time project, positioning the console as the showcase platform for a rebuilt Hyrule. That makes the October 29 bundle feel like a deliberate one-two: themed glass in hand a week before the software lands on November 5.

Collectors should also note accessories are split. The console bundle covers Joy-Con 2; the Pro Controller plus castle stand is a separate, store-limited chase item. If previous Zelda special editions are a guide, expect secondary-market premiums within days of sell-through—especially if pre-orders open with little notice.
